St Donatus shows us that when God leads us, our supposed destination might not be the point of the journey. Lord make me willing to go where you lead me, even if it turns out to be a surprise!
Meditations for Each Day, pg.423, “Forgive Us Our Debts”
There was a time when we did not exist, and in His divine omnipotence He created us from nothing. Our bodily powers and spiritual faculties are His gifts to us. Anything we have been able to achieve as the result of mental or manual labour has been made possible by His help.
Scripture Readings for Day 22 of Overcoming Fear
Psalm 19:13-14 Who can detect trespasses? Cleanse me from my inadvertent sins.14 Also from arrogant ones restrain your servant; let them never control me. Then shall I be blameless, innocent of grave sin.
1King 8:61 * Your heart must be wholly devoted to the LORD, our God, observing his statutes and keeping his commandments, as on this day.”
I grew up as a Lutheran where I was taught sin was sin. For the past 52 years I struggled with venial and mortal labels on sin. Today I read the above Psalm and there you have it… venial sins-inadvertent (heedless) sin, mortal sins-arrogant (willful) sin. and it goes on to say arrogant sin is grave. Of course, I then have to read before and after verses so that I am sure I understand what is really being said and into my head comes a thought about this endless fight over standard and daylight time. In Psalm 19 I read about the sun running its course as God has set it. Then I think about man’s desire to run every show he comes in contact with and daylight-saving time pops into my head. Something for me to think about and ponder.
Interesting article in the Cashton Record e-edition for today. Talking about the race for sheriff. That is another can of worms. Why? you may ask… Revels was not going to run so that he could start a new chapter in his life and so new leadership could step forward and guide the office, he endorsed his chief deputy who lost the primary. So now Revels is running as a write in. My thought process says okay Revels wins and down the road decides to quit and his chief deputy (undersheriff) is appointed to finish out his term. My thought again… was that the plan all along? So according to local statues Section 17.21(1) and Article VI, Section 4 of the Wisconsin Constitution a vacancy in the office of the sheriff is filled by appointment by the Governor of Wisconsin for the remainder of the unexpired term. Until that appointment takes place the undersheriff (chief deputy) assumes the duties of the office. There’s not a comprehensive historic tally regarding the appointment but under WI State Statutes 59.26 and Article VI Sec 4 when a vacancy occurs the undersheriff (chief deputy) automatically acts as interim sheriff. Because of their immediate familiarity with the department, governors frequently select the serving undersheriff (chief deputy) when appointing a permanent replacement to finish out term. My overactive mind is at work again.
