The lake is peaceful, with moonlight shimmering over the ripples
Coffee’s good
Today we say Happy Birthday to AB who turns 53. Have an awesome day.
Lenten Action: Take a sheet of paper put a line down the middle. On the left make a list of those things you are grateful for. As the week progresses add to your list. On the right hand side make comments on your blessings. Try to see your glass as half full, see potential, see opportunity. Be amazed at the life given you.
Antonio Cardinal Bacci suggests we find the church on our way home from work each day. To spend a quarter hour with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Giving thanks for our day, the blessings afforded us, and the opportunities given.
Shortly I will begin to pack up here at the lake. I am truly grateful for the time spent here. In a few days we will be back at our normal life. Hopefully we will be able to incorporate some of the quiet times into it that we experienced this past month.
Drove out to Greeley cemetary to visit Dad & Mom C and David. Hard to believe dad has been gone 30 yrs, mom 7, and David almost 3. Drove past the home place. It is being well taken care of by the Palmers. The cottonwood is gone, but its memories remain.
The old St Joseph’s Church still supports its beautiful stain glass windows. I think of dad sitting under the Kateri window. He was her advocate long before she attained sainthood. I wonder how she got a window at St. Joe’s before she was a Saint. It is now the Greeley Community Church. I often wonder how they explain the “pagan windows” to their congregation.
Grilling is on the agenda for our supper. Pork steaks and a salad seem to be the best way to round out this day.
It has been good for us, this vacation. It has been good.
Left home this morning under grey skies with a stiff breeze. That didn’t change any except for the temperature dropping as we headed south. The weatherman advised we could run into snow flurries about 1 this afternoon but so far that hasn’t happened.
We stopped in PDC at the resale shop we like to frequent on main street… no treasures called to us. Our next stop was for a quick fish sandwich in Guttenburg. Fareway to pick up cooking supplies was a good stop in Dyersville along with the resale shop where we found a lecturn for our home altar.
The lake is cold and grey with choppy water but still our happy place. Not sure what calls us back time and time again except for love the the sunroom there. The stress of traveliing just faded as the door was opened and belongs put into place.
Looking for a local fish fry for tonights supper. Then a relaxing evening with nothing else in the works.
We found Linda hanging the wash. She didn’t hear us drive in due to the washing machine engine. We laughed as she jumped a foot into the air at the sound of the man’s voice. Henry & Steve had left for work, Marty, for school. It was decided we’d do our exploring and comeback for supper.
We head S on 183 towards Monowi, NE. Will find our lodging for tonight and then go exploring.
Driving the Outlaw Trail on Hwy 12 in NE. Interesting history in this area. We’re in cattle country.
Butte, NE named for the surrounding land formations.
Spencer, NE, 1891 named for an Army Captain or a US Senator George E Spencer.
Bristow, NE, 1902 named for Benjamin Bristow Secretary of the Treasury under US Grant.
Lynch, NE, 1892 named after John Lynch a pioneer settler.
Just passed page 31… smiling
Monowi, NE having 🧀 & crackers and 🍵 in the parking lot of the closed post office. Feeding scraps to the 4 feral 🐈. I’m a titch disappointed, but I am glad we came. Just a shame someone who worked so hard may see it all gone.
Just as we are ready to leave, a car arrives. It may just be the mayor of Monowi. Her plate says “Monowi1”.
Found our lodging for the night in Butte,NE Another mom & pop, inexpensive, decent beds, very clean, lots of plug-ins, even a small desk with discrete lighting for those late night/early morning work times. Rm#2 for us. Sacred Heart church within walking distance.
Today I remember my grandfather, Clair Packer who would have marked his 110 birthday. May he rest in peace.
Today’s Saint is Conrad of Piacenza know for “The Miracle of the Bread”
Today’s ponder: “Can ordinary man hate the world enough to change it and yet love it enough to think it worth changing.”
Today we see our amish friends Henry & Linda. They moved here last fall. Henry now and again called and said stop in today and say hi. We would laugh and comment on the 10 hr drive to do that. Today we will, and hopefully they will be home for us to do that. We will then travel on to Monowi, NE which I have wanted to see for years now. It is a small town with a population of 1 just over the border. From there we will wander around till we find another mom & pop motel to spend the night in. I am enjoying our great adventure. The man and I haven’t taken the time these past 50 yrs to vacation. Perhaps more truthfully we were too busy working to make time for one. Sometimes in life making a living interfers with enjoying each others company. Our intent this month was to spend time with each other as we spent time wandering the countryside seeing people and places. Thus far we have taken in Wisconsin’, Iowa’, Missouri’, Kansas*’, Oklahoma*+, Texas*+, Minnesota’, South Dakota*’, and Nebraska*’. * denotes it is a plains state, ‘ denotes midwest states, + denotes southern states. I’ve always found interest in knowing things like geography and history. This trip has allow us the time to find things out we other wise wouldn’t have bothered to think about. Hopefully you are enjoying the information as well.
Today begins the second leg of our vacation adventureLent
Hats off the the fire departments that responded to the call at Joe Miller’s on Omega Rd yesterday. It was a long arduous day for you and you did it well. Thanking God for the good weather that allowed access without peril. The late Bishop Miller’s family will be rebuilding as soon as possible.
Book…The Amish Wife… by Greg Olsen… good. Have located his other books connected to this one and they have arrived. ”Abandoned Prayer” (graphic content) and “A Killing in Amish Country”. Both rest on the reading table. Also found “Spirit Car”, written by the same author as “The Seed Keeper”; it too waits on the reading table. My Lenten read arrived as well. Looks like I’ll be set for a while in the reading department.
Speaking of Lent Ash Wednesday is Feb 14th Easter is March 31st Remember… “Your fasting should not be someone else’s penance.” I cannot remember who said that but it definitely needs to be remembered. As does the offering up of your fasting for the souls in purgatory. Think about renewing your relationship with Christ. He’s the only one who can turn this world around.
The hookers and pimps finally stopped partying around 0330. Whoa, that statement caught your eye is my guess. Apparently, the weddinggoers were having a party. The party theme must have been designated call girl and boss.
The girl, her man, the man, and myself were enjoying takeout in the gathering area of the motel. The man exclaimed, ” HOLY CATS!!!” as the partygoers paraded through. The rest of us burst out in laughter. An avid conversation ensued.
Imagine if you will a woman twice my size (and we all know I am not a small woman) sauntering thru the lobby, fishnets, black mini with a slit to the top of the thigh, cami, theater makeup, dramatic hair and a silky negligee wrap being led by a long-haired, oiled goatee, (I was looking for gold teeth, didn’t see any) dangling gold necklace boss in spandex shorts… (Trust me, you would have laughed hysterically and we did) followed by at least 6 similar dressed couples, and a couple of furries.
The entertainment in the lobby was enjoyed by all and much better than any club could have provided.
We attended Mass previous to this… that is another story for later.
I love the fall season as well. Shorter days and being home evenings with family. The Fallow (winter Dec 21-Mar 19) season is almost on us. This is nature’s time to rest, slow down, and repair. We humans should do the same. Make this time all about replenishing.
Today should be another easy day. Have 4 must does, and one work on a little.
