Morning Offering given
Village covered in drifting snow with winds blowing. No school and a wonderful day to stay home.
Coffee strong
St. Eucherius taught us to surrender the solitude you treasure and learn the true blessing of obedience of God’s will. God, enlighten and enkindle my mind and heart when I read scripture.
Today we remember Kaye Krogmann, who died in a car accident in 1999. May she rest in peace.
Meditations for Each Day pg. 70, The Five Tribunals: public opinion, our own conscience, penance, civil court, and the judgment seat of God.
Scripture Readings for Day 3 of Lent.
•Matthew 6:16-18• “When you fast,* do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you may not appear to others to be fasting, except to your Father who is hidden. And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.
•Isaiah 58:6-7• Is this not, rather, the fast that I choose: releasing those bound unjustly, untying the thongs of the yoke; Setting free the oppressed, breaking off every yoke?d 7 Is it not sharing your bread with the hungry, bringing the afflicted and the homeless into your house; Clothing the naked when you see them, and not turning your back on your own flesh?e
•Mark 2:18-20• The disciples of John and of the Pharisees were accustomed to fast.e People came to him and objected, “Why do the disciples of John and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests fast* while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 20 But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day.
•Acts 13:2-3• While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off.
•Leviticus 23:27-32• Now the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement.* l You will have a declared holy day. You shall humble yourselves and offer an oblation to the LORD. 28 On this day you shall not do any work, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the LORD, your God. 29 Those who do not humble themselves on this day shall be cut off from the people. 30 If anyone does any work on this day, I will remove that person from the midst of the people. 31 You shall do no work; this is a perpetual statute throughout your generations wherever you dwell; 32 it is a sabbath of complete rest for you. You shall humble yourselves. Beginning on the evening of the ninth of the month, you shall keep your sabbath from evening to evening.
Pristine snow covers the land this morning. The wind has blown it through the cracks and swirled it around objects, turning things into a sort of nature snow sculpture. The whiteness reminds me of how clean a person is scrubbed by baptism or confession and penance. How blest we are that Christ willingly chose to take all our sins (past, present, future), giving himself as a sacrifice for us. It is only right that, moving forward, we do our best to keep our souls clean for him. I know how difficult this is. Even as we reach our elderly years, we need to keep ourselves from sinning by thought, word, or deed. Sometimes we forget the thought and word part of sinning. Take time today while you fast to make note of those types of sin, carrying them to the confessional for forgiveness.
Home today. All thoughts of the SUV leaving have been cancelled. Later in the day, when the wind dies down and the highways are cleared, I’ll think about a bank run and taking someone home. Otherwise, office cleaning and arranging are in the works.
Know you are prayed for.
