After two days of keeping it up, the swelling on my foot has gone down. Some are still there, and the foot is still painful. We shall see how it goes today. The midwife is home, the mom is in the hospital, and the man is off to Iowa to return someone. Plants have been watered, laundry has been completed, and clothes have been put away. There is one copy job left to do, but it will wait until after the copier has been cleaned tomorrow. Did I tell you I had purchased a home planner? I’m loving it! Everything is laid out on when to and what to do.

As I ponder homemaking I realize that most homemakers have never been taught how to keep a home. They’ve had “bring home the bacon”shoved down their throats since infancy but not many have been taught how to clean, cook, do laundry, plan meals, and basically run a household. This art is being lost in today’s world. Perhaps it is time to revive this time honored position in life.

Proverbs 31:10-31

IX. POEM ON THE WOMAN OF WORTH

10 Who can find a woman of worth?
Far beyond jewels is her value.
11 Her husband trusts her judgment;
he does not lack income.
12 She brings him profit, not loss,
all the days of her life.
13 She seeks out wool and flax
and weaves with skillful hands.
14 Like a merchant fleet,
she secures her provisions from afar.
15 She rises while it is still night,
and distributes food to her household,
a portion to her maidservants.
16 She picks out a field and acquires it;
from her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength;
she exerts her arms with vigor.
18 She enjoys the profit from her dealings;
her lamp is never extinguished at night.
puts her hands to the distaff,
and her fingers ply the spindle.
20 She reaches out her hands to the poor,
and extends her arms to the needy.
21 She is not concerned for her household when it snows—
all her charges are doubly clothed.
22 She makes her own coverlets;
fine linen and purple are her clothing.
23 Her husband is prominent at the city gates
as he sits with the elders of the land.
24 She makes garments and sells them,
and stocks the merchants with belts.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity
and laughs at the days to come.
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom;
kindly instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over* the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;
her husband, too, praises her:
29 “Many are the women of proven worth,
but you have excelled them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting;
the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Acclaim her for the work of her hands,
and let her deeds praise her at the city gates.

3rd week of Advent–Gaudette Sunday– https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EeSeeWMnlA We are halfway through the Advent season–REJOICE!

Gaudette Sunday

The foot, swelling going down as long as I don’t wear a shoe and keep it elevated. The hand is tingly today, no real pain, just a pins and needles thing. Cpap doing what is it suppose to do. I still hate it but I do it. If my body was a car I’d be looking for a new one, this one has too many miles.

Work continues on the upstairs re-no. Hard to believe the difference it is going to make up there. Lots left to do but we are on track.

We’ve redone many homes over the past 50 yrs. This one has taken the longest and our zip to get things done has dwindled. That may have something to do with our ages but has also had lots to do with the things that needed repairing before we could even think about remodeling as we generally do it ourselves. That nightlight creates quite the light smear, doesn’t it? Behind that door are two more rooms that need to be done. Luckily, only the ceilings, flooring removal, and wall painting. Slow and steady wins the race. This little area will make for a good library/TV area with room for a futon should we need extra sleeping space. All photos will be posted before and after once things are finished.

Today Bacci speaks to “Consolations from God” found on page 502 of his book. Men and animals have some power to comfort and console us but it is nothing compared to the comfort we receive from God and it cannot satisfy our hearts. Worldly honors can also intoxicate our pride and self-conceit, but it doesn’t last very long. Heavenly consolations may sometimes decrease or disappear, in these trials, we can often get through with patience and resignation. Peace of mind will soon return if we stay focused on God.

Village damp cold, silent, and sleeping

Morning!
Looking to be another fine day of snow, wind, etc. Had plans to go shopping but am thinking there is too much going on here so I will probably stay home. The man has plans to work upstairs today. I need to take a good look at the garage and get some things to the garage attic and Christmas stuff down from. We have people coming in one week…!

Today Bacci is talking about “The Desire for Perfection” page 501 of his Meditations for Each Day. Lev 11:44; 19:2, Mt 5:48. We are obliged to make every possible effort to advance in holiness. Sad experience teaches us it is very difficult to reach the level of sanctity to which we are called by God and impossible to reach without him. He isn’t asking us to do the unreachable, he is asking us to desire it, and in return, we strive for it in all our actions. Lk 22:15 There are two kinds of desire passive and efficacious. Hell is full of those who desire without action.

New baby girl on the ridge “Lily” arrived before the midwife could get there. Mom and baby doing fine. Dad a bit excited but did good.

Did I tell you the man picked up a couple of long church pews? The plan is to use them at the table instead of chairs when we set up things for Christmas in the garage. Will make for comfy seating as they both have nice padded seats.

Today is another LaCrosse day, then we are finished for the weekend. There are a couple of copy jobs waiting for me in the office.

Fun and games will be had on the 21st & the 25th. Sessi found Speak Out & Watch Your Mouth. It should be a good time. Yes, there will be a card table. Dr. G told me to check out “Ransom Notes” I did and it too is on the want list.

The foot swelling has increased. Next appt is the 19th. Nuff said on my thoughts regarding the efficiency of getting things looked into.

I want to talk about communication with inmates in the state of Iowa. Did you know that they do not get handwritten letters? The letters are scanned, the originals discarded, and the inmates must read them on tablets purchased only from Iowa Prison Industries at the cost of $150 to read the e-messages. I don’t know how other states do it but as far as I am concerned this is bunk (nonsense)… coercion (the practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats)… interference with the US Mail system and destruction of mail (18USC Ch 83: Postal Service (whoever knowingly and willfully obstructs or retards the passage of the mail, or any carrier or conveyance carrying the mail, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 6 months or both). I understand the necessity of controlling contraband and do not have an issue with that. I do have an issue with making e-messages the only way. That physical mail is a contact that can be felt, touched, carried around, etc. A connection with a loved one. This insane push of electronics being the only way is just wrong. Period. Can anyone tell me how their state does inmate mail?

Today St Andrew’s Christmas Novena Day 12, Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, Day 11 of Advent (USCCB Daily Readings), Chapter 11 of Luke

Looking towards another easy day. 2 copy jobs, the workshop girls, and a newspaper to pick up at the printer.

How’s your Advent going? I’ve been noticing how busy people are while they shop. Being in such a frenzy cannot be much fun. Years ago we gave up the frenzy and now our list is limited to: something to read, something to wear, and something wanted (within reason). St Nicholas does not leave presents under the tree, here he puts them in your stocking.

I try to give my special needs workshop girls a little something at Christmas. This year at the resale store I found sand dollars and at another store poinsettias handkerchiefs. Then went online, for the sand dollar poem. https://www.courageouschristianfather.com/the-legend-of-the-sand-dollar/#google_vignette the poinsettia story, and the candy cane story https://www.creativebiblestudy.com/legend-of-the-poinsettia.html#google_vignette https://www.candyhistory.net/candy-origin/candy-cane-history/#google_vignette
A small token and perhaps information they would not have otherwise known at very little expense but with much thought in selection. That is really what it is all about. Letting someone know you are thinking of them.

Morning! Easy day ahead, for which I am thankful. A couple copy jobs to finish and deliver, Dr. appointment and some books that need dropping off. The foot needs a rest. Swollen, red, painful. Not sure what is on the man’s agenda.

Today Bacci speaks to “Peace of the Soul” page 496. He says “Peace of soul is more to be desired than anything else in this world“. He goes on to say that wealth, honours, and pleasures are valueless as long as we are discontented and disturbed at heart. He said happiness is essentially internal, not external. Anyone looking for it outside of themselves cannot find it simply because it does not exist there. He advised interior peace is capable of bring us whatever happiness can be obtained in this world. Isa 48:22 tells us “there is no peace to the wicked” Mat 11:28-29 tells us that Jesus invites us to “Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart and you will find rest for your souls.” True peace consists in doing the will of God constantly and with love. Job 1:21 “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord!” This may all seem too difficult but only in this way can we obtain interior peace. The Imitation of Christ speaks to this should you desire to read more about it.

Week #2, The Bethlehem Candle-Peace

This week in Advent “The Bethlehem Candle”/Peace. Today is Day #9 of the Advent Season. Day #10 of St Andrew’s Christmas Novena and Day#6 of Cardinal Burke’s Novena to Our Lady for her intercession. Just as she did at the Battle of Lepanto. Our Advent Bible Readings this week -Chapters 8-14 in the Book of Luke, one chapter per day.

If you have an interest in Our Lady’s victory, books regarding this have been written: Lepanto 1571…The Madonna’s Victory by Nic Fields, The Battle of Lepanto 1571 by Robert F Marx, Crescent and Cross by Hugh Bicheno, Lepanto 1571-1871 by Giuseppe Giuriato, Play the Naval Battle of Lepanto 1571 by Luca Stefano Cristini

Christmas cards have begun to arrive. I should be working on mine but am not. My goal for 2025 is to write more physical letters so I thought I would begin that with a “New Year” letter instead of a Christmas card. After all, the Christmas season doesn’t end at Christmas.

Today Syria fell, and Assad (the president) has fled the country after advising everyone to be peaceful during the takeover. Locals cheered as they gathered in the streets of Jarmana, a Damascus suburb. Damascus is where: Abraham rescued Lot- Gen 14:14-15, King David successfully subdued the enemies of Israel- 2 Samuel 8:5-6, & St Paul had his conversion- Acts 9. It was an important cultural/commercial center due to its geographical position at the crossroads of the Orient and the Occident, (between Africa and Asia). It was the capital of the Muslim world from 661 to 750. Ruled by the Turks from 1500 to early 1900. Our Lady of Victory Oct 7, the anniversary of the decisive victory of the combined fleet of the Holy League of 1571 over the Ottoman navy at the Battle of Lepanto. In 1918 a combined Arab and Australian force arrived in Damascus to spearhead its liberation from the Turks during WWI.
