I received a surprise in the mail: an invitation to my nephew’s son’s graduation. I was instant angry, maybe had I been invited to his wedding, or perhaps received an invitation to a baby shower, or even a baby announcement, or if there had been something more than total, complete silence except for exchanges of sympathy at the family funerals (no one bothered to call me about but I found out about and attended out of respect for family) I would have reacted differently. Maybe if they had treated all of my children as cousins instead of just the one biological child, ignoring the adopted, or if there had been invites to important family events, or even acknowledgements on the street, I wouldn’t have been angry. I threw the announcement in the trash. Now to work on the instant angry. Which means I must forgive them. That might take a lifetime.
